Job Description
**Job title** Staff Software Engineer (Backend/Infra) **Role Summary** Lead the design, implementation, and operation of cloud‑native backend and infrastructure for a life‑sciences data platform. Own end‑to‑end ownership of critical platform components, architect technical strategy, and mentor engineering talent while working closely with product, design, and executive stakeholders. **Expectations** - Minimum 8 years of hands‑on backend/infrastructure engineering. - Proven staff‑level leadership: take projects from concept to production, build technical vision, and influence business direction. - Drive technical excellence across scalability, performance, reliability, and cost efficiency. - Mentor junior engineers, set coding and design standards, and advocate for best practices. - Collaborate tightly with cross‑functional teams to align engineering priorities with product strategy. **Key Responsibilities** - Lead backend and infrastructure development of critical platform components (design, coding, testing, deployment). - Architect and maintain cloud‑native systems using Terraform, Helm/Kubernetes, GCP services (Pub/Sub, Workflows), APIs, event‑driven pipelines. - Construct and communicate a vision that balances engineering feasibility with commercial impact. - Mentor engineers and oversee their technical and design contributions. - Collaborate with product, design, and leadership to prioritize roadmap and scope releases. - Optimize backend stack for performance, reliability, and scalability through profiling, tuning, and resilient patterns. - Implement and enhance CI/CD pipelines, automated environments, and end‑to‑end testing frameworks. - Ensure clear, concise written and verbal communication, including code documentation and stakeholder updates. **Required Skills** - Deep expertise in backend programming (e.g., Go, Java, Python, Node.js). - Advanced proficiency with Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes, and GCP services (Pub/Sub, Workflows, Cloud Functions). - Experience building and operating event‑driven, API‑centric architectures. - Strong understanding of CI/CD automation, containerization, and testing best practices. - Performance profiling, load testing, and capacity planning. - Leadership and mentorship abilities; ability to sell technical vision to non‑technical stakeholders. - Excellent written and verbal communication; clean code and documentation skills. - Empathy, kindness, and collaborative mindset. **Pluses** - SOC2, ISO, or other compliance experience. - Kubernetes cluster management and release engineering. - Cross‑cloud expertise (GCP + AWS). - Demonstrated GitHub portfolio of complex projects. **Required Education & Certifications** - Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. - Optional certifications: GCP Professional Cloud Architect, Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Terraform Associate.
