**Job title**: Principal Design Engineer
**Role Summary**: Lead engineering for large EHV/HV substation projects (AIS & GIS). Oversee all engineering stages from early engagement to as-built, ensuring compliance with project specs, QA/QC, HSSE, and standards. Serve as technical lead for project interface coordination, tender preparation, site support, and claim management.
**Expactations**: Deliver high‑quality designs that meet customer, legislative, and SSEN/SPEN requirements. Maintain project schedules, budgets, and risk controls. Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, and stakeholders. Manage site queries and support commissioning and handover activities.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Lead and coordinate detailed design, tender documentation, and site support for EHV/HV substation projects.
- Supervise engineering teams (local, remote, and external partners) and provide technical guidance.
- Integrate civil, steel structure, protection, control, and auxiliary power designs, ensuring interface alignment.
- Drive engineering budgeting, scheduling, forecasting, risk, and change management.
- Manage technical claims and support project, contracting, and operations teams.
- Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers; respond to site queries and produce as‑built documentation.
- Travel up to 25 % of the time for domestic and international site visits.
**Required Skills**:
- Advanced knowledge of substation design: layouts, primary design, calculations, grounding, lightning, steel design input, transformers, HV/MV switchgear, CT/VT calculations.
- Proficiency in system studies: load flow, short‑circuit analysis, single‑line diagrams, auxiliary power systems, power cables.
- Familiarity with secondary engineering, protection, and control systems.
- Experience with installation and commissioning (plus).
- Strong communication and multicultural teamwork.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, MicroStation, and AutoCAD.
- Fluent in English (written and spoken).
**Required Education & Certifications**:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively pursuing it.
- Knowledge of SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.
