Data Scientist – Sr/Staff Software Engineer (Remote, US)
**Role Summary**
Lead and execute advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives that drive freight rail operational efficiency and strategic decision‑making. Collaborate cross‑functionally with engineering, product, and business stakeholders, transforming large, complex datasets into actionable insights and scalable production‑ready models.
**Expectations**
* 5+ years building optimization and predictive algorithms.
* Senior technical authority in Python, R, SQL, and Java.
* Proven ability to design, test, deploy, and maintain end‑to‑end machine learning workflows.
* Strong communicator capable of translating technical findings into stakeholder‑friendly visualizations and reports.
* Stay current with emerging data science technologies and best practices.
**Key Responsibilities**
1. Define analytic initiatives, develop strategies, and own solution design to meet business objectives.
2. Analyse large, multi‑source datasets, identify patterns, and derive insights that inform operational decisions.
3. Build, validate, and deploy advanced machine learning models for forecasting and workflow optimization.
4. Design visual dashboards and deliver compelling narrative reports to executive and operational teams.
5. Maintain and enhance data pipelines, ensuring data quality, consistency, and scalability.
6. Integrate data science solutions into reporting platforms or production systems, overseeing implementation, testing, and monitoring.
7. Mentor junior data scientists and collaborate with software engineering to embed models into product releases.
8. Pursue continuous learning, researching new methodologies, algorithms, and cloud‑native data science platforms.
**Required Skills**
* Senior proficiency in Python, R, SQL, and Java.
* Extensive experience with data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) from SQL/NoSQL databases.
* Deep knowledge of statistical analysis, machine learning algorithms, and model deployment pipelines.
* Advanced data visualization proficiency (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, matplotlib, ggplot).
* Hands‑on with cloud data science platforms (AWS SageMaker, Azure ML, GCP Vertex AI, or equivalents).
* Strong analytical reasoning, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
* Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced, collaborative, cross‑functional environment.
**Required Education & Certifications**
* Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related STEM field.
* Certifications in data‑science or cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty, GCP Professional Data Engineer) are highly desirable but not mandatory.
