Job Description
**Job Title** Veterinary Extern – General Practice **Role Summary** An externship program offering 2‑to‑4 week placements for veterinary students to gain hands‑on clinical experience in a full‑service companion animal practice that combines general practice and emergency/critical care. The extern will observe and participate in daily operations, client interactions, diagnostic procedures, and a wide range of surgical cases under mentorship. **Expectations** - Complete a 2‑ or 4‑week externship within a scheduled 12‑hour shift pattern. - Engage actively in clinical rounds, patient care, and case‑sharing sessions. - Demonstrate professionalism, teamwork, and eagerness to learn. - Maintain accurate records and assist with electronic medical‑record documentation. - Adhere to all practice protocols, biosecurity measures, and anesthesia safety standards. - Receive mentorship from licensed veterinarians and collaborative support from veterinary technicians. **Key Responsibilities** - Observe and assist in diagnostic procedures (radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, CBC/chemistry, urinalysis). - Participate in surgical cases: exploratory surgeries, GDVs, GI foreign‑body removal, splenectomy, enucleation, cystotomy, fracture repairs (FHOs, TPLOs). - Support anesthesia induction, monitoring, and recovery for routine procedures. - Contribute to patient handoffs, rounds, and do‑not‑disturb sign‑ups. - Assist with bedside nursing, wound care, and post‑operative management. - Maintain and sterilize surgical and diagnostic equipment. - Document clinical findings and treatment plans in the practice management system. **Required Skills** - Foundational knowledge of companion‑animal anatomy, physiology, and common clinical conditions. - Ability to communicate clearly with clients, students, technicians, and other staff. - Strong teamwork and adaptability in a fast‑paced, 24‑hour clinic environment. - Basic surgical and procedural familiarity (suturing, joint traction, anesthesia monitoring). - Proficiency with digital medical record entry; comfortable using medical software. - Commitment to follow‑through on cleaning, protocol adherence, and safety compliance. **Required Education & Certifications** - Current veterinary student in the clinical portion of the program (any class year eligible). - Enrollment in an accredited veterinary college recognized by the NVA (National Veterinary Association). - No prior professional veterinary license or advanced certifications required. ---
