Job title: VP Data & Engineering
Role Summary: Senior technical leader reporting to the CEO, responsible for designing and executing the engineering strategy for a multi‑modal data platform that ingests, standardizes, validates, and delivers genomics, electronic medical record (EMR), and patient‑reported outcome data for life‑saving clinical trials.
Expectations:
• Own the end‑to‑end data platform vision and architecture.
• Build a high‑performance engineering organization and foster a culture of ownership and technical excellence.
• Deliver production‑grade data pipelines that meet regulatory and security standards.
• Partner with product and commercial teams to align technology roadmaps with business goals.
• Maintain a secure‑by‑default approach for sensitive PII/PHI data and uphold rigorous operational discipline.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Design, develop, and continuously enhance a scalable, secure multi‑modal data platform.
2. Oversee the ingestion, standardization, validation, and enrichment of genomics, EMR, lab results, and patient‑reported outcomes.
3. Recruit, mentor, and grow a high‑performing engineering team; implement pragmatic processes and ownership metrics.
4. Collaborate with SVP of Product and cross‑functional stakeholders to ensure technical roadmaps align with commercial objectives.
5. Ensure data quality, provenance, and compliance with regulatory requirements, including HIPAA/UK GDPR.
6. Champion a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and data‑driven decision making.
7. Communicate progress, risks, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
Required Skills:
- Proven experience delivering production‑grade data pipelines in fast‑paced, high‑growth startups.
- Deep expertise in systems design for sensitive data (PII/PHI) with a secure‑by‑default mindset.
- Strong leadership and people‑management skills, including hiring, coaching, and scaling teams.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, make pragmatic trade‑offs, and influence cross‑functional partners.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
- Solid knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure), data warehousing, ETL/ELT, and data modeling.
- Experience with genomic data standards (e.g., FASTQ, VCF) and clinical data integration (FHIR, OMOP).
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and data governance frameworks.
Required Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Relevant certifications in cloud architecture (AWS Solutions Architect, GCP Professional Data Engineer, Azure Solutions Architect), data engineering, or security (CISSP, GRC) are advantageous.
