Job Description
**Job Title:** Laboratory Support Assistant – Lab Operations **Role Summary:** Entry‑level support role ensuring efficient day‑to‑day laboratory operations. Works under the Lab Manager to maintain supplies, waste management, cleaning, basic solution preparation, and compliance, enabling scientists to focus on experimental work. **Expectations:** - Reliable weekday attendance during standard working hours. - Strict adherence to health, safety and environmental standards. - Ability to prioritize tasks, support audits and continuous improvement. - Maintain confidentiality and professionalism within a research setting. **Key Responsibilities:** - Receive, unpack and store laboratory deliveries. - Assist with ordering, tracking and restocking consumables. - Manage and autoclave waste; remove daily waste and recycling. - Perform routine cleaning of surfaces, equipment and glassware. - Support general laboratory organisation and housekeeping. - Enforce PPE use, HSE compliance and COSHH procedures. - Conduct manual handling tasks safely (lifting, storing, relocating equipment). - Weekly stock checks; flag low‑stock, expiring or soon‑to‑expire items. - Prepare and refill basic solutions (70% ethanol, sheath fluid, etc.). - Monitor liquid nitrogen levels; coordinate refilling with facilities. - Perform sink flushing and other weekly maintenance tasks. - Assist with audits, compliance checks, deep‑cleaning and equipment maintenance. - Coordinate laboratory coat laundry and engineer access. - Contribute to sustainability initiatives (My Green Lab). - Identify and recommend opportunities to improve laboratory efficiency. **Required Skills:** - Strong organisational and time‑management abilities. - High attention to detail and accuracy. - Basic knowledge of biology, chemistry, and lab safety (COSHH, MSDS). - Ability to follow SOPs and manual‑handling guidelines. - Clear communication and teamwork skills. - Problem‑solving and adaptability in a dynamic lab environment. **Required Education & Certifications:** - Minimum of two A‑levels in Biology or related scientific subjects, or equivalent vocational qualification (e.g., BTEC). - Completion of health, safety and environmental training (COSHH, spill handling) is preferred.
