Job Specifications

Join a one-year industrial placement where you’ll apply theoretical and applied science to real-world challenges that support national security. Gain experience working on complex scientific modelling, advanced diagnostics and material behaviour in extreme environments — while developing skills that set you up for a future career in research, engineering or defence science.

Key criteria

Studying a relevant science or STEM degree
At least 2:2 achieved to date
Able to start a full-time placement in August 2026
Eligible to obtain UK Government security clearance
Strong analytical mindset and ability to learn new tools or methods
Effective communicator and collaborative team player
Able to work on-site in Aldermaston (commutable from Reading/Basingstoke)

What you’ll do

During your placement you will contribute to projects involving:

Radiation detection analysis and experimental measurement
Scientific modelling (e.g., photon, neutron, electron transport codes such as MCNP)
Computational physics and algorithm development
Data-driven analysis and simulation techniques
Studying material properties under extreme pressures and temperatures
Mathematical modelling to solve advanced physics challenges

You’ll focus on one or two technical areas to build depth, supported by experienced scientists, a dedicated line manager and a mentor.

You will also take part in:

On-the-job learning and tailored professional development
A collaborative group project with other placement students
Networking opportunities across early careers and technical communities

Entry requirements

We welcome students currently studying a degree in:

Physics (Applied or Theoretical), Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Structural Engineering or related scientific disciplines.
You must have achieved at least a 2:2 in your degree so far by August 2026.
