Founding Research Scientist / Founding Research Engineer

Location: London / Hybrid

Compensation: Top of market + very generous equity

We’re partnering with a stealth AI research lab building an autonomous AI Scientist—a system that accelerates scientific discovery by integrating modelling, reasoning, simulation, and experiment automation. The team is assembling a small group of exceptional founding engineers and researchers to build the core infrastructure behind this platform.

This is a hands-on role at the intersection of machine learning research, scientific computing, and high-performance engineering, ideal for someone who thrives in deeply technical, exploratory environments.

What You’ll Work On

Build and maintain end-to-end ML training and inference pipelines (distributed training, data processing, deployment workflows).
Develop research tooling and infrastructure to accelerate iteration across simulation, experiment, and AI-driven reasoning.
Prototype and evaluate new ML algorithms in collaboration with researchers and domain scientists.
Optimise performance, scalability, and reproducibility across HPC and cloud-based compute systems.
Contribute to data pipelines and evaluation frameworks for structured + unstructured scientific data.
Collaborate with model researchers, materials scientists, and robotics engineers to build integrated intelligent discovery systems.

What We’re Looking For

Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Math, or related fields.
Strong programming skills in Python and experience with PyTorch or similar ML frameworks.
Background in modern ML development (training, evaluation, inference, distributed systems).
Solid understanding of software engineering and data engineering principles.
Comfortable working with Linux, Git, HPC or cloud platforms.
Strong communication skills and ability to work across interdisciplinary teams.

Why Join

Join an elite research team working at the frontier of materials science, AI, and automated experimentation.
Shape how autonomous simulation + experiment systems evolve from the ground up.
Top-of-range compensation, highly competitive equity, full benefits, and flexible work environment.
Build the foundational systems behind a new category of scientific innovation.
