Senior Network Security Engineer (Freelance) – 11 Months – Brussels, Belgium

Step into a mission-critical freelance role as a Senior Network Security Engineer, where your expertise will directly shape the security and resilience of our client’s network infrastructure. You’ll join a high-impact team, driving secure connectivity and safeguarding digital assets across both on-premises and cloud environments. What You’ll Be Doing
Design and implement robust network security strategies to counter cyber threats and prevent unauthorized access
Configure, manage, and optimize firewalls, VPN solutions, proxies (forward and reverse), and load balancers
Shape secure access architecture, including Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) principles
Continuously monitor network and security systems for threats, anomalies, and performance issues
Conduct regular security audits and vulnerability assessments to ensure compliance and resilience
Guarantee secure, stable connectivity with ISPs, ExpressRoute, WiFi networks, DNS solutions, and TACACS
Detect, analyze, and respond to security incidents, performing root cause analysis and remediation
Provide advanced technical support and collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, and application teams
Automate network and security tasks using scripting to drive operational efficiency and reliability
What We’re Looking For
Ownership mindset — you take initiative and drive outcomes, not just tasks
Proven experience in network management, routing, and switching (dynamic/static, inter-domain, MPLS)
Deep expertise in enterprise firewalls, VPN technologies, proxies, web application firewalls (WAF), and load balancing
Hands-on experience with cloud security, securing data in transit and at rest, and secure access to cloud resources
Strong grasp of ZTNA principles and secure access architecture
Expertise in threat detection, vulnerability management, and incident response
Solid knowledge of operating systems used in network environments, security standards, and cryptographic protocols
Proficiency in scripting for automation and operational efficiency
Analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills — you thrive on complex challenges
Leadership and mentoring capabilities; able to work autonomously while collaborating with domain leads
Detail-oriented, quality-focused, and results-driven with a proactive attitude
Adaptable, stress-resistant, and curious about new technologies
Language Proficiency
Excellent proficiency in either French or Dutch
Good command of the second national language (French or Dutch)
Good working proficiency in English
Other Requirements
On-site presence required three days per week (hybrid model)
Ability to perform night operations on-site when needed
Professional certifications in networking and security are a strong asset (not mandatory); ongoing learning and certification are encouraged
