Job Title: Data Scientist (Home)

Overview

An established and fast-growing Home insurance portfolio is hiring a commercially focused Data Scientist to support pricing strategy and technical delivery. The Home function has expanded rapidly, growing from a small specialist team into a significant portfolio over the past few years, with strong growth ambitions and continued investment planned.

You will sit between pricing, commercial strategy, and data science. The role suits someone who enjoys both deep technical modelling and understanding how pricing decisions influence market position, trading performance, and portfolio strategy.

This position reports into the lead responsible for the commercial Home portfolio and offers strong progression potential, including future ownership of trading responsibilities as the portfolio continues to scale.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver deep technical analysis supporting Home pricing and trading decisions.

• Build and maintain predictive models using supervised machine learning approaches.

• Apply techniques such as GBM and other pricing-focused modelling methods.

• Translate complex analysis into clear commercial insights and actionable recommendations.

• Support development of pricing structures, segmentation strategies, and portfolio direction.

• Analyse market positioning, competitor behaviour, and non-standard risk segments.

• Work closely with pricing, data, and commercial stakeholders to shape strategic decisions.

• Identify patterns and underlying drivers within data to inform trading actions.

• Balance technical rigour with commercial pragmatism and speed of execution.

Technical Skills and Experience:

• Strong background in insurance pricing or a related commercial analytics environment. Home insurance experience preferred; motor insurance or retail banking credit risk backgrounds are also relevant.

• Solid understanding of supervised learning techniques and practical model development.

• Experience working with machine learning in pricing environments, including GBM approaches.

• Strong Python skills; SQL experience beneficial.

• Ability to build models while maintaining focus on business outcomes and strategy.

Commercial and Strategic Capabilities

• Strong strategic thinking with ability to understand how pricing decisions fit into wider marketplace dynamics.

• Commercial mindset with ability to interpret data in a trading context.

• Comfortable framing problems clearly and identifying the right analytical questions.

• Strong awareness of portfolio dynamics, market positioning, and risk segmentation.

• Independent thinker with ability to work with pace and autonomy.

Salary and Logistics:

• Salary range: £75,000 to £100,000 depending on experience and level.

• Suitable for senior or lead-level candidates.

• Long-term role with strong progression potential as the Home portfolio grows.

• Hybrid working with flexibility across London or Liverpool offices:

• Option 1: 2 days per week Liverpool, 1 day per month London.(the week you go to London you wont be required to go to Liverpool as well)

• Option 2: 2 days per week London, 1 day per month Liverpool (the week you go to Liverpool you wont be required to go to London as well)

• Exceptional candidates seeking fully remote arrangements will still be considered.

• Travel to the non-primary office is expensed.
