Overview

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior AI Ethics Lead to drive the organisation’s Responsible AI strategy, governance frameworks, and ethical assurance practices. This role is critical to ensuring our AI systems are transparent, fair, safe, and compliant with emerging UK, EU, and global regulations. You will work closely with senior leadership, data science teams, legal, risk, and external partners to embed ethical decision‑making across the full AI lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

AI Governance & Ethical Frameworks

Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organisation’s AI ethics and governance frameworks.
Define ethical standards, principles, and risk‑mitigation requirements for AI and data‑driven products.
Oversee ethical impact assessments, bias analysis, explainability reviews, and model assurance processes.

Regulatory & Compliance Leadership

Interpret and implement regulatory requirements including the EU AI Act, UK government guidance, sector‑specific regulation (FS, healthcare, public sector), and global best practices.
Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Risk to ensure responsible deployment of AI systems.

Cross‑Functional Stakeholder Engagement

Serve as the subject‑matter expert on AI ethics for senior executives, internal teams, and external clients.
Build strong partnerships across Data Science, Product, Engineering, Cybersecurity, and Policy teams to embed ethics‑by‑design.
Lead workshops, training, and awareness programmes promoting responsible AI practices.

Assurance, Monitoring & Governance Oversight

Establish ongoing monitoring frameworks for model fairness, drift, transparency, accountability, and human oversight.
Develop documentation standards including model cards, governance reports, and audit trails.
Support incident reporting and response processes for AI‑related ethical or compliance issues.

Strategy & Innovation

Shape long‑term Responsible AI strategy in alignment with business priorities and emerging technologies (GenAI, LLMs, automated decision‑making).
Stay ahead of global standards, ethics research, and regulatory evolution, advising leadership on impacts and opportunities.
Represent the organisation in professional forums, working groups, industry events, and external partnerships.

Essential Skills & Experience

7–10+ years’ experience in AI Ethics, Responsible AI, Data Governance, Risk, Policy, or related fields.
Deep understanding of AI governance, fairness, transparency, bias mitigation, and model assurance.
Strong capability working with data science and technical teams; able to translate ethical principles into practical workflows.
Experience with regulatory frameworks such as:
EU AI Act
UK AI Regulations & DPDI Bill
GDPR / data protection
Sector‑specific compliance (Financial Services, Public Sector, Healthcare)
Proven track record influencing senior stakeholders and driving organisation‑wide adoption of new standards.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to simplify complex AI risks for non‑technical audiences.
Experience contributing to AI standards bodies, ethics committees, or industry working groups (desirable).

Preferred Qualifications

Degree or postgraduate qualification in AI, Data Science, Ethics, Law, Public Policy, Computer Science, or similar.
Certifications in Responsible AI, Data Protection, or Risk Management (e.g., GDPR certs).
Publications, conference talks, or recognised contributions to Responsible AI research or industry practice.
