Role Overview

The Local Marketing & Communications Manager will lead all local marketing, communications, and media efforts for the NORCECA U19 Men’s Continental Championship in Burnaby. The role is responsible for building awareness, driving ticket sales, and ensuring consistent messaging across paid, owned, and earned channels in the local and regional market.

The Local Marketing & Communications Manager will sit on the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and work closely with Tourism Burnaby, Volleyball Canada, Simon Fraser University, and Volleyball BC to deliver a cohesive and effective local promotional program.

The role will report to Tourism Burnaby’s Director of Marketing. The position will also collaborate with and provide coordination support to the BCIT Community and Events Assistant (Intern), as required, where there is crossover between marketing, communications, and community engagement activities.

Key Responsibilities

Local Marketing & Promotional Strategy

Develop and implement a comprehensive local marketing and communications plan to drive awareness and ticket sales in Burnaby and the surrounding region.
Recommend and activate a mix of paid, owned, and earned media opportunities.
Monitor performance and optimize campaigns to support ticket sales and awareness goals.
Identify and advise on community-based promotional opportunities, including local sport clubs, schools, post-secondary institutions, community centres, and events.

Advertising & Creative Coordination

Guide the development of digital advertising and promotional materials to ensure alignment with event branding and Volleyball Canada guidelines
Canva/design experience desirable
Ensure consistent and correct use of event logos and brand assets, with logos provided by Volleyball Canada

Budget Management

In conjunction with Volleyball Canada, oversee and track the local marketing and communications budget.

Media Relations & Public Relations

Lead local media outreach in advance of the event to build awareness
Work with a selected provider to:
Define media objectives and story angles.
Support the development, distribution, and uptake of press releases and media advisories.
Maximize earned media coverage in the local market.
Serve as the primary local media contact during the event.
Event Week Communications & Media Support
Provide communications support onsite as needed during event week.

Reporting & Post-Event Evaluation

Develop post-event reporting in the area of marketing and communications.

Estimated Time Commitment

The Local Marketing & Communications Manager role is designed as a part-time, milestone-driven position in the lead-up to and during the event.

Total estimated effort: Approximately 180 hours, subject to refinement based on final scope and confirmed media activity
Pre-event period (February–April 2026): Average of 8–12 hours per week, increasing around key ticketing and media milestones
Event period and post-event week (May 2026): Average of 20–30 hours per week, including onsite coordination and media support

Compensation:

$13,000
A bonus component will be available, subject to mutual agreement and achievement of defined marketing and ticketing objectives.

Qualifications and Desired Skills

Required

5+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or event promotion
Ability to execute integrated marketing campaigns that drive attendance
Experience working with partners and stakeholders in a committee environment
Strong self-management skills in a milestone-driven, part-time contract role

Desired

Sport event or major event marketing experience
Familiarity with earned media outreach and local media pitching
Canva or digital design capability
Knowledge of Burnaby or Metro Vancouver audiences and media landscape
Availability for onsite support in May 2026
