About us

Hoare Lea is a human-centric and planet-conscious engineering consultancy. We offer intelligent and sustainable solutions to complex design challenges for the built environment throughout the UK and further afield.

We provide a wide range of engineering and consultancy services, including acoustics, air quality, building services (MEP), fire, lighting, security and sustainability to name but a few. Together, our highly skilled teams use technical expertise and problem-solving skills to bring buildings to life. We ensure that whatever the building, its design is outstanding, and its operations meet the needs of the communities it serves. Our People & Development team plays a critical role in enabling our technical experts to thrive and deliver exceptional outcomes for clients.

We are as committed to providing an environment where everyone can realise their unique potential. So, in joining Hoare Lea, you will experience a business that enriches your knowledge, supports your wellbeing, and welcomes your individuality. Our benefits include a 9-day fortnight, private medical cover (following probation), a generous annual leave allowance that increases with service, pension contributions, wellbeing support, paid professional membership and access to study assistance, alongside an employee stock purchase plan.

Whatever your ambitions or circumstances, our aim is to enable everyone to develop their knowledge, give their best, and enjoy what they do.

About the role

We have a brand-new opportunity for an HR Adviser to join our People & Development team based in our London office. This is a hands-on advisory role with a strong employee relations focus, providing visible, day-to-day HR support within a complex and fast-paced environment.

In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

Provide day-to-day, operational HR advice and support to employees and managers within the London business units, acting as a visible and approachable HR presence and escalating complex or high-risk matters to the Senior HR Business Partner as appropriate.
Act as a first point of contact for employee relations matters, managing a varied ER caseload across absence, performance, conduct, probation, capability and grievance, ensuring cases are handled fairly, consistently and in line with policy and employment legislation.
Coach and support line managers on people management issues, providing practical, solutions-focused guidance and supporting or attending meetings where required.
Support managers with employee wellbeing matters, including sickness absence, workplace adjustments, occupational health referrals and income protection processes, promoting a positive and supportive employee experience.
Deliver training and briefings to line managers on core people processes such as absence management, performance management, appraisals, probation and wellbeing.
Work closely with the People & Development administration team to ensure accurate documentation, effective handovers and high-quality delivery of employee lifecycle processes.
Support the firm’s immigration and right-to-work processes, including visa administration, monitoring and compliance activities, and advise on standard visa-related queries for recruitment and employment.
Provide advice and support on IR35 assessments and contractor arrangements, escalating complex or higher risk matters where appropriate.
Produce people data and management information to support people-related decision-making, respond to bid and tender queries, and identify emerging people trends or risks.
Contribute to People & Development initiatives and projects, supporting annual processes such as pay review, bonus, benefits renewal, engagement activity and gender pay gap reporting, and leading on discrete workstreams where appropriate.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll have:

Previous HR advisory experience in a generalist or ER-focused role, supporting multiple stakeholders in an office-based environment.
CIPD qualification at Level 5 (or working towards), with support for ongoing professional development.
A solid understanding of UK employment legislation and HR best practice.
Experience managing a broad range of employee relations cases, including complex matters.
Working knowledge of IR35 contractor regulations (or willingness to develop expertise).
Experience supporting visa and right-to-work processes.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence to build credibility at all levels.
Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities.
High level of computer literacy, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
A calm, professional and discreet approach when handling sensitive matters.
Experience with Power BI or Power Automate is desirable.
