Overview

Job Title: IT Intern

Location: Fairfield, NJ

Duration: full-time (up to 40 hours per week), for a period of 10 weeks (June 8 – August 14)

Position Summary: Kearny Bank’s summer internship provides hands-on experience across core IT operational domains and a capstone project that delivers real value to the business. Interns rotate through IT Service Desk, Information Security Operations, Enterprise Architecture, and Enterprise Networking—spending one week embedded with each team—then focus on a special project under the guidance of the Director of IT.

Responsibilities

Program Overview & Rotations (Weeks 1–4)

IT Service Desk — Lead: AVP/IT Service Delivery Supervisor
Shadow intake/triage of tickets and incident routing.
Resolve common endpoint, Microsoft 365, and peripheral issues under supervision.
Document one SOP or “how ‑ to” that improves first ‑ call resolution.
Information Security Operations — Lead: VP/IT Manager – System Security
Observe alert triage workflows (EDR, SIEM dashboards) and basic incident handling.
Assist with vulnerability tracking, exception documentation, and user awareness collateral.
Produce a brief “security control spotlight” one ‑ pager for staff.
Enterprise Architecture — Lead: VP/Enterprise Architecture Manager
Learn how reference architectures and standards drive solution design.
Contribute to a lightweight architecture review (non ‑ prod) and update a component diagram.
Draft or update a glossary/decision record for a current platform or pattern.
Enterprise Networking — Lead: AVP/Network Architect
Gain exposure to network monitoring, firewall hygiene, and Wi ‑ Fi health checks.
Assist with routine tasks (port mapping, patch scheduling artifacts, inventory clean ‑ up).
Prepare a simple “as ‑ is” network view for a branch or micro ‑ segment (with guidance).

Capstone Project (Weeks 5–10+)

Under the guidance of the Director of Information Technology, the intern will deliver a tangible outcome (e.g., a service improvement, automation prototype, standards artifact, or dashboard) that ties together lessons from all rotations. Scope is sized for completion within the remaining weeks and presented to IT leadership at program close.

Key Responsibilities

Apply ITIL ‑ aligned service practices during the Service Desk rotation.
Support security operations with basic triage and documentation.
Contribute to architecture documentation and standards under mentorship.
Assist with routine network operations tasks and monitoring.
Maintain accurate notes, SOP drafts, and artifacts from each rotation.
Complete the capstone project and deliver a final presentation/demo.

Qualifications

Pursuing a BS/BA in IT, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
Foundational knowledge of Windows, basic macOS, Microsoft 365, and networking concepts (IP, VLANs, firewalls).
Strong curiosity, problem ‑ solving, and written/verbal communication skills.
Ability to work onsite/hybrid at [Fairfield HQ — confirm] and travel to local branches if needed.

Preferred

Familiarity with ticketing systems and ITIL basics; scripting (PowerShell/Python) a plus.
Exposure to cloud concepts (Azure), identity (Entra ID/Azure AD), and endpoint management.
Interest in cybersecurity operations, enterprise architecture, or network engineering.

Compensation: $21/hr
